Most PC users re-install Windows operating system twice or at least once in a year for a number of reasons. One of the first and must do things after installing or re-installing a version of Windows is to install all necessary hardware drivers (see how to know driver version).
And in order to get some drives, such as on-board graphics, network and audio, you need to know the model and manufacturer of your PC’s motherboard or mainboard.
If you’ve recently purchased your PC, you probably know the model number and manufacturer of the motherboard but if your PC was built or purchased a couple of years ago, you probably have no idea about the installed motherboard
While it’s possible to get information about motherboard model and manufacturer with the help of third-party tools, it’s possible to get these information using Command Prompt as well.
Having said that, you might not be able to get manufacturer and model name with the help of Command Prompt and System Information utility if you own an OEM manufactured computer. In that case, please contact your PC’s manufacturer to identify the motherboard.
In this guide, we will show how you can know the model and manufacturer of your motherboard with and without the help of third-party tools.
Step 1: Open Command Prompt. To do so, simply type CMD in Start menu search box or in Start screen and then press enter key. Note that you don’t need to run Command Prompt as administrator.
Step 2: In the Command Prompt, type Systeminfo followed by enter key to get detailed information about your computer including the date when Windows was installed and Windows boot time. In order to know about your PC’s motherboard, you need to look for two entries labelled System Manufacturer and System Model.
The name of your motherboard’s manufacturer appears right next to System Manufacturer, and model number appears next to System model entry. As you can see in the below picture, Intel name (motherboard manufacturer) appears next to System Manufacturer and DH67BL (model number) appears next to system model.
Once you have the information, type exit to close the Command Prompt.
Step 2: In the left-pane, click on System Summary to view detailed information such as operating system name, version, type, and other hardware information. Look for the entry named System Manufacturer and System Model to know your motherboard’s manufacturer and model name. That’s it!
There are plenty of free apps out there to help you know about your PC’s hardware. Programs such as Speccy or CPU-Z can be used to get detailed information about processor, motherboard and other components.
Step 1: Visit this page and download CPU-Z program. You can either download the installable or portable version of the software. If you have downloaded the setup file, run the same to install it. And if you have downloaded the portable version, extract the zip file to get CPU-Z executable.
Step 2: Launch CPU-Z program and then switch to the Mainboard tab.
Step 3: Here, you can see motherboard’s manufacturer, model and chipset information. Good luck!

Method 2: Identify your motherboard using System Information utility
Step 1: Open Run command by simultaneously pressing Windows and R keys. In the box, type Msinfo32 and press enter key to open System Information window.Step 2: In the left-pane, click on System Summary to view detailed information such as operating system name, version, type, and other hardware information. Look for the entry named System Manufacturer and System Model to know your motherboard’s manufacturer and model name. That’s it!
Method 3: Know your motherboard’s model number using third-party apps
As mentioned above, if you own an OEM manufactured computer (if a version of Windows was pre-installed on your computer ), you might not get required information using these tools. You need to contact your PC’s manufacturer to get the required information. There are plenty of free apps out there to help you know about your PC’s hardware.
